Mangatoetoe Hut was built by the New Zealand Forest Service in 1978. The hut is managed by DOC as a Standard hut and has sleeping capacity for 10 persons.
The building was originally going to be a shelter at Te Kopi, but due to severe erosion to its intended site in 1977, it was re-designed as a hut and transported to Mangatoetoe. All materials had to be carried 600 metres to the site.
The hut is located at the Southern end of the Aorangi Crossing, a 30 km tramp through the forest park, to Te Kopi.
The hut is maintained by Mike Mulder, who has a Management Agreement with DOC for the hut upkeep.
