Membership of the Greater Wellington Backcountry Network Inc is Free.
Committee Elections; Being a member entitles you to participate annually in the election of the Committee and Officers of the society. All members of the GWBN are eligible to be nominated as committee members. The core role of the committee is to achieve the Objects of the GWBN on behalf of the membership.
Huts and tracks; The GWBN is responsible for the upkeep of five huts in the forest parks, and also the maintenance of over 300 kilometres of tramping tracks in the Tararua and Aorangi forest parks. There are opportunities to particpate in volunteer work on huts and tracks.
Funding; The Department of Conservation provides an annual grant to the GWBN to support upkeep of backcountry facilities. This may be for clubs and other hut custodians with funding for huts they have a management agreement for. And also for huts and tracks that the GWBN manage. Only registered members may apply for GWBN funding. GWBN members will be kept updated on work programmes and be able to provide feedback to the committee on hut and track proposals.
Types of Membership
Individual; any individual person with an interest in backcountry recreation in our local forest parks.
Corporate Groups; includes tramping clubs, NZ Deerstalkers Branches etc. A representative must be nominated and name entered in the application form.
