Caring for our Huts

The Greater Wellington Backcountry Network (GWBN) has been working to supply cleaning materials (in big orange Mitre10 buckets) to the huts in the Tararua, Aorangi and Remutaka forest parks.

Our aim is to encourage all hut users to “do your bit” in keeping the huts clean and helping to prolong the life of our precious forest park hut network. A trial at 10 huts supported by DOC Wairarapa initiated over the last 12 months tells us that people are using their supplies and that huts are generally being kept in a much cleaner state than previously.

Cleaning materials are now being delivered to all 50 non-serviced huts in Tararua, Remutaka and Aorangi Forest Parks. Mitre 10 Petone are supporting the supply of materials and several several local tramping clubs have got on board with the initiative and helped with fundraising for the purchase of cleaning materials.

Getting the buckets to huts is now our main priority! Local tramping clubs are pitching in, as well as DoC rangers and GWBN members and supporters.

A team from the Mt Cook Tramping Club (North Island) carried two buckets containing cleaning material through the Aorangi Crossing, to the Washpool and Pararaki huts.

You can help! We will be relying on all hut users to let us know when materials at a hut need topping up. You can pass this information to our co-ordinator by making a post on Tararua Forum | Facebook or by e-mailing GWBN directly at info@tarhc.org.nz
